Do you need a fishing licence in Spain, Balearic islands or Canary islands?

For fishing on the shores of Spain, the Balearic islands or the Canary islands, a fishing licence is mandatory. And it is also mandatory to carry the licence and to be able to show proof of your identity (ID card, passport) when fishing! You don’t need a certificate of competence.

Can a tourist fish in Spain, Balearic islands or Canary islands?

Anyone can fish on Spanish territory (Spain, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands) provided they have a valid fishing license. Nationality is thus irrelevant.

What happens if I go fishing without a fishing licence?

If you are caught fishing without a licence by police, your equipment could be confiscated and you could be fined heavily. Local fishermen sometimes like to call the police. They see you as competition and hope you might not have a licence, so they call the police. Save yourself the headache and only go fishing with a licence.

Do you need a proof of competence (Prüfungsbescheinigung) for the fishing licence?

No proof of anything is needed. All you have to do is enter your personal identification details when applying for the fishing licence. The passport number is important here. Because the printout of the fishing licence is only valid in connection with the passport.

Where can I buy a fishing license for Spain, Balearic islands or Canary islands?

You can apply for the fishing licence online from our website. We made it easy for anyone to be able to get a fishing licence for the shore line / coastline of Spain, Balearic islands or Canary islands.

Where is the shore fishing licence valid?

The sea shore fishing licence is issued by the Balearic Islands government and allows you to fish in the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera) and all the Canary Islands (La Palma, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote), as well as anywhere on the Spanish coast. But it does NOT allow you to fish in lakes nor in rivers. You need different licenses for lakes and rivers!

Also important to remember is that each autonomous region in Spain has it’s own minimum sizes, catch limits, etc. Make sure you always check which rules apply in the area where you fish.

Can I fish from a rubber boat or kayak with the shore licence?

With the shore licence, you can also fish using license-free watercraft. So with the rubber boat, kayak, SUP, etc. is aloud.

Where is the best fishing in Spain, Balearic islands or Canary islands?

Rocky structures provide fish with cover and shelter where they can hide safely from larger fish and feed more comfortably in shallow waters. In turn, offshore predatory fish know that rocky coasts hold plenty of prey and thus are a good destination when looking for food nearshore.

As a general rule, you should expect fish to be in greater abundance if any rock piles or clusters area in the surf zone. However, what you should also expect, is that in spite of the increased bites count, it will be more difficult to land hooked fish because of the higher risk of getting snagged or caught between the rocks and the weed. In other words, your terminal tackle will be more exposed to kelp, weed, rocks, and barnacles that can catch or cut your line at any moment, resulting in a lot of missed catches and many expensive items left in the surf.

Shore fishing those snaggy structures need, therefore, to be done with a lot of precaution and different techniques to prevent snags and line cut-offs.

How many rods can you fish with?

You are allowed to use 2 rods for fishing – with 3 hooks each. Keep in mind that a treble hook counts as three hooks.

Where, when or with what am I not allowed to fish?

– fishing is prohibited in all ports and entrances to the ports, as well as in the port facilities;
– within 150 meters of frequented bathing areas such as beaches;
– on the beach between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., between May 1st and September 30th;
– in areas with special protection, such as certain nature reserves;
– fishing with means of professional fishing (e.g. nets) is not allowed;
– you are not aloud to sell your catch;
– a maximum of 5 kg of fish may be fished per day.

Certain fish have to be marked after they are caught!

To make the illegal fish trade more difficult, some fish species have to be marked after the catch. Of course only if you plan to take the fish with you. Marking the fish is done by cutting off the lower lobe of the caudal fin. This must be done immediately after the catch!

How many kilos of fish can you catch per day?

You are aloud to keep a maximum of 5 kg of fish per day.

Fishing on beaches and in harbors or ports is prohibited. You have to keep a distance of 150 meters.

From what age is a licence required?

The fishing licence is only valid with an identity card / passport and is only required from the age of 14. Therefore, children younger than 14 years do not need a fishing licence!

Can I fish from a boat with the individual shore licence?

Yes, you are aloud to fish from a boat as long as the boat is on anchor. This means that you can’t use the individual shore fishing licence for trolling. With the licence, you can also fish with license-free watercraft like a rubber boat, kayak, SUP, etc.

Is the license issued in an autonomous community valid to fish in the waters of another community?

Yes, the licence is valid throughout Spain including the Balearic and Canary Islands.

As established in Royal Decree 347/2011, of March 11, which regulates recreational maritime fishing in external waters, in its fifth additional provision (recognition of licenses) is stated:

  1. The activity license of the autonomous community will be issued by the community in which the recreational fishing boat has its base port.
  2. The autonomous communities will establish collaboration and cooperation mechanisms for the mutual recognition of licenses.

Which fishing licence will you get?

The licence that we request for you comes from the government of the Balearic Islands. This licence requires the least amount of paperwork and data. Nevertheless, this licence is valid throughout Spain including the Canary Islands (and of course the Balearic Islands).

How long does it take to get a fishing license in Spain, Balearic islands or Canary islands?

The processing times are typically 24 to 48 hours, once all the required information is received.

Is it also possible to receive the fishing license faster than 48 hours?

If you need the fishing license quickly, you can opt for the application with fast delivery. When you submit a request for fast delivery of the fishing license (24 hours, fast delivery), we will treat your request with priority.

Although we will do our utmost best to deliver the permit within the specified time, we are of course always dependent on the processing time at the government of the Balearic Islands. In periods when it is busier than usual with regard to applications for fishing licenses, such as holiday seasons or when there is delay due to technical issues, it can happen that receiving the license takes longer than the indicated time.

All applications we receive will be submitted to the government of the Balearic Islands as much as possible the same day. Applications they receive on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays will sometimes be processed on Mondays.

Of course we will always inform you in case it takes longer than expected.

Please take this into account when applying for your permit. Therefore, do not wait until the last minute before you go on holiday to apply for the fishing license.

What does the fishing licence look like?

The fishing licence is a PDF file in the Spanish language with a registration number, your personal details and ID number. Furthermore, the licence contains numerous rules and regulations which must be complied with. That’s why we also provide a translation in English, German, French, Polish or Dutch if requested!

Are the rules for recreational fishing the same throughout the Spanish territory?

Regulations concerning recreational fishing and minimum sizes will change from time to time. Since the permits we request for you come from the government of the Balearic Islands, the permit you receive will always contain the current rules and regulations for the Balearic Islands applicable at the time of issuing the permit. We advise you to always check what the applicable rules are at the moment you exercise your fishing rights in Spain or Canary Islands. Although the rules and regulations in the Spanish territory are very similar, there can still be small differences that you should take into account. What is our refund policy?

Due to the nature of the service we provide and the costs we incur for the license application, it is unfortunately not possible to cancel a licence / licence application and get a refund. We process the applications received almost immediately and therefore incur costs directly. Therefore we have a no refunds policy.

I am 65 or older

Unfortunately, for people aged 65 and over, the application for a fishing license must be made in person at the issuing authority on the Balearic Islands. As we are an online service, therefore we cannot serve you if you are 65 or older. This is unfortunately a limitation that we have no influence over. We apologize for the inconvenience.
